"Ten days after the attacks on the World Trade Center Towers, I stood at Ground Zero and tried to take in the aftermath of one horrific day. The thoughts of that made me cry out to God, No way! There's just no way evil can be that deep and that dark! But strangely, while the ashes smoldered around me, and the grief of it overwhelmed me, a profound hope rose in my heart - the local church is the hope of the world. There were many people and organizations helping out after the disaster.
"But a work of a deeper kind was happening behind the scenes in downtown Manhattan. The most important work of all was being done by pastors and church members, volunteers of churches, ordinary Christ followers. They were in the middle of all the misery, addressing the concerns of the soul. It was happening 24 hours a day. That was the untold media story. So many other organizations met the external needs of people, but it was the church that reached out to care for the inner needs of their fellow human beings. The church became the physicians for the souls of people."
That experience underscored, yet again, the convictions that have been forming in Bill Hybels for the past 30 years - that the church has an unique mission to fulfill on planet Earth, and that the future of our society depends on whether or not church leaders understand that and focus the vision of local churches accordingly.
Where Bill's heart beats the fastest is with leaders in local churches. He believes to the core of his being that local church leaders have the potential to be the most influential force in the world. If they "get it," churches will be the redemption centers for change that Jesus imagined them being. So that's Bill's hope - that the spiritual gift of leadership will come alive in churches everywhere and, as a result, the church will become the force in the world against which the gates of hell cannot prevail.
Courageous Leadership (Audible Audio Edition) Bill Hybels Tom Casaletto Zondervan Books
This book is great. I appreciate how Bill Hybels shares honestly, with humility and strength. The book is full of practical advice. Parts of the book are helping me to more clearly know how to explain the biblical foundation of what I believe about leadership. One of my favorite parts of the book is Bill's story about asking a couple to donate their piano. This story struck a chord with me -- that his huge step in leadership created space for this couple to be blessed by an unusual donation to help others worship.

Courageous Leadership (Audible Audio Edition) Bill Hybels Tom Casaletto Zondervan Books Reviews
This is not just a book for church leaders. Being in the marketplace but focused on growing the kingdom, I found this book to be incredibly applicable in developing leadership in the business world.
I have the cassette audiobook tapes. I have totally enjoyed listening to the series. Hybels is a very unique Pastor, who through God, has built a very unique (but highly Biblical) Church. All of his comments are worth looking at. Every Church needs to consider converting their Sunday morning service to a Seeker-friendly service. It highly concerns me that the average Church in America caters mainly to believers. As a result of that, we rarely see Church growth by profession of faith. We see "transfer growth" (Christians coming from another Church) more than anything. Unless someone has grown up in the Church, they would probably feel lost in our typical Sunday Services. To the unsaved, who has has no Church background, the average Church would have to Win this person to 2 things before they could get saved 1. To the Culture of Church and, 2. to Christ. So, the Church culture itself, sometimes, becomes the greatest hindrance to new salvations. Hybels realized this when he created his Sunday morning services to minister to the unsaved, unchurched. Also, his comments about hiring ministry staff and what he looks for in a staff person (The 3 C's- Character, Competence, and Chemistry) are very good. He shares mistakes he has made in hiring staff, and totally explains the 3 C's in detail. If your a Pastor, buy the book. If you are a real busy Pastor, buy the audiobook and listen to it in your car. If you are open at all to new, effective ideas, this is the book (or tapes) to get.
Great for leadership development for both pastors and their teams. Sometimes ministry materials from larger churches and large church leaders can be difficult to scale and to a small church setting, this was not the case for this book.
What I like most Was actually learning new principles and leadership points and positions and avenues and actions in terms of mission statements and returning and placing that previous mission back to its original vision. I absolutely found nothing negative about this book. An absolute refreshing approach in terms of a successful and abundance of overall knowledge.....I learned and was awakened all at once wishing I personally knew the writer.
I don't ever see myself as a leader on the level this book addresses but it definitely gave me a greater appreciation on what it takes to run a mega church such as the one I attend. I am getting ready to colead a woman's small group so it was helpful
Hybels earned the right to write this book by perservering for 30 years, and turning a revolutionary concept--the seeker-sensitive church--into standard practice within evangelicalism. He offers a breadth of material that will prove most useful to those pastors who have not fed on a steady diet of leadership books.
Much of the information Hybels offers can be found elsewhere, yet he packages it together in concise and cogent chapters that cover the breadth of religious leadership principles in down to earth prose. Perhaps the most useful chapter offered more than a dozen "pathways" to intimacy with God. Ironically, he suggested that relating with other Christians and being aggressive for Christian causes are two pathways that most would overlook. Not all Christians are wired to spend hours in solitary contemplation--and God can speak just as intimately to those who excel in activity or in group fellowship.
Equally important--and perhaps particularly disappointing for many readers--is that Hybels offers no magic formulas. Yes he succeeded in building a unique mega church out of a dream and a handful of people. Yet, he says money problems develop character and faith, and patience and endurance are the stuff fulfilled dreams are made of.
Bottom-line Hybels may not knock your socks off, but he offers practical, hard-earned advise on Christian leadership that is broad, insightful, and yet very accessible. This is a book the author did not have to write--except that he clearly has a heart for pastors and for the church.
