When Callum’s mother asks him to visit for her birthday, she unwittingly comes to his rescue. Callum is a broken and unhappy man, emotionally abused by his lover to the point of feeling worthless, alone, and without hope. But during his trip, while passing through the Salt Lake Desert, Callum picks up a hitchhiker named Danny, who shows him that life is full of wonder and blessings. He’s on the verge of believing in himself again, but can he really make a new life for himself by jumping from the arms of one man into another’s?

A Bittersweet Dreams title It's an unfortunate truth love doesn't always conquer all. Regardless of its strength, sometimes fate intervenes, tragedy strikes, or forces conspire against it. These stories of romance do not offer a traditional happy ending, but the strong and enduring love will still touch your heart and maybe move you to tears.

The short story is a simplistic tale in the M/M romance genre with an HFN ending. The book’s description presents the plot/storyline: Two lonely men meet and find respite for their sexually frustrated lives during a journey across the desert. Because the story is character driven, I will focus my comments on the two main characters and a backstory one.

Callum, thirty-three years old, agonizes over his ten-year relationship with David, who insists on an open relationship. It is one-sided from Callum’s perspective. In the beginning, Callum agrees, but the relationship evolved into one that questioned his self-worth and integrity. Stopping for gas in the middle of Salt Lake Desert, Callum agrees to give Dan— a hitch hiker going to St Louis to take as short-term construction job— a ride. Callum is a believable, sympathetic personality, and the reader cares for him, but wishes to tell Callum “to get with the program” and ditch the selfish David. This is where Dan comes in.

Dan, thirty-seven years old, is too flawless a character. He is a handsome, virile, sex-on-two-legs male, and Callum’s type of man. There is one hint of his vulnerability: many unfulfilling, sexual experiences. To quote Dan: “Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve made love with a man?” That might be okay, except the author portrays Dan as spiritualistic, and an individual wholly conversant with the complex issue of abusive relationships. (Is Dan an experienced victim of an abusive relationship, also?) Dan tells Callum; the abused is complacent in the circumstances and is responsible for the emotional damage. The solution: make a choice to stay or leave the hurtful relationship. By the end of the journey, Dan convinces Callum he must make the difficult decision.
It wouldn’t be an M/M romance without a sex scene, and there is a beautifully written one— intense, but not graphic.
I have read the story three times: first for the story, second, to understand the characters’ motivations.

But on the third read, the story still lacked credibility if I held to the premise of two lonely men meet, experiencing meaningful sex during a journey across the desert. Dan’s perfectionism held the key. So I imagined Dan as a supernatural being— an angel, if you will— who intervenes to release Callum from his dysfunctional relationship with David. Even though Dan says, “I’m no angel,” thinking him so worked for me, making “Desert Crossing” acceptable.

Thomas’ narrative pace is comfortable, written with simple declarative sentences allowing for an easy read, a tribute to Thomas’ skill as an author. Author, B. G. Thomas, has several titles published by Dreamspinner Press, “Desert Crossing,” one of them. I purchased the short story from Amazon. I enjoyed reading “Desert Crossing,” and gave it a four-star recommendation.

Very boring.
I'm not sure what to call this. It's not even a story. I can't find one good thing yo say except it was short.
